Temporary power is one of those things that gets treated as an afterthought until it's the reason a turnaround slips or a construction crew stands around for a day. On industrial sites in Canada — where distances are long, winters are hard, and the loads are anything but small — it deserves the same planning discipline as the permanent installation.
This guide walks through when industrial facilities need temporary power, what the options are, what the Canadian Electrical Code expects, and the mistakes we see most often on Alberta sites.
When industrial facilities need temporary power
Construction and expansion. New builds and plant expansions need power on site long before the permanent service is energized. That means office trailers, tool power, welding, lighting, heat trace, and often large equipment like cranes and concrete pumps.
Turnarounds and outages. When a facility de-energizes a substation or MCC for maintenance, the work itself still needs power — lighting, ventilation, tools, temporary HVAC, and sometimes critical process loads that can't go down.
Bridging a utility upgrade. A service upgrade or a utility transformer replacement can leave a site without its normal supply for days or weeks. Temporary generation keeps operations running while the new equipment is installed and commissioned.
Equipment failure. A failed transformer or main breaker can take months to replace at current lead times. Temporary power turns a plant shutdown into a manageable inconvenience.
Remote and greenfield sites. Well pads, camps, exploration sites, and early-stage projects often run entirely on temporary generation for months or years before grid power arrives — if it ever does.
Seasonal and peak loads. Some facilities need supplemental capacity for a few months a year, and renting is cheaper than building.
Your options
Diesel generator sets remain the workhorse. Available from small portables through 2 MW+ trailer-mounted units, and multiple units can be paralleled for larger loads. They're fuel-hungry, and in Canada you'll need winter-grade fuel, block heaters, and often an enclosed or heated arrangement for reliable cold starts.
Natural gas generators make sense where there's a gas supply on site — common on oil and gas facilities. Lower fuel cost and emissions than diesel, but slower to source and less flexible to move.
Battery energy storage (BESS) has become a serious option for temporary applications, either standalone for lighter loads or paired with a generator to reduce run hours, fuel, and emissions. Particularly useful where noise or emissions restrictions apply.
Temporary utility service. Where the utility can provide a temporary connection, this is usually the cheapest and most reliable option for longer-duration needs. The catch is timing — utility temporary services can take weeks to months to arrange, so apply early.
Temporary distribution. Whatever the source, you'll need transformers, distribution panels, spider boxes, feeder cable, and cable protection to get power where the work is. Rental fleets cover most of this, but sizing and layout still need to be engineered.
What the code expects
Temporary installations are still electrical installations. In Canada, they fall under the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1), with Section 76 addressing temporary wiring specifically, plus the provincial amendments and STANDATA bulletins that apply in Alberta. A few points that catch people out:
- Permits still apply. Temporary installations generally require an electrical permit and inspection, just like permanent work. Some jurisdictions have specific temporary-service permit categories. Check before you energize, not after.
- Grounding and bonding. Temporary generators need a proper grounding arrangement, and the neutral bonding configuration (bonded vs. floating neutral) has to match how the generator is connected to the site distribution. Getting this wrong is a shock hazard and can cause nuisance tripping or fail to trip at all.
- GFCI protection. Receptacles supplying portable tools and equipment on construction sites require GFCI protection. Plan for it in the distribution design rather than relying on plug-in adapters.
- Cable protection. Feeder and branch cable run across roads, walkways, and work areas need physical protection and proper support. This is one of the most common inspection deficiencies.
- Overcurrent protection and conductor sizing. The same rules apply as for permanent work. "It's temporary" is not a reason to run undersized cable.
- Equipment certification. Rental gear should carry recognized Canadian certification marks. Equipment that's been modified or that came from the US market may need field evaluation.
- Time limits. Temporary installations are meant to be temporary. Many jurisdictions cap the duration (often around a year) before the installation must be made permanent or re-permitted.
Alberta also layers on Occupational Health and Safety requirements for construction sites, and arc flash considerations under CSA Z462 apply to temporary switchgear and distribution just as they do to permanent equipment.
Sizing it properly
The biggest source of trouble on temporary power jobs is a bad load estimate. Undersize the generator and you get nuisance shutdowns, voltage sag, and damaged motors. Oversize it and you pay for fuel and rental you don't need, and a lightly loaded diesel will wet-stack and foul itself over time.
Do the load calculation properly:
- List every load — including the ones people forget: heat trace, temporary heating, office HVAC, lighting towers, battery chargers, and welding machines.
- Account for motor starting. A large motor's inrush can be several times its running current, and generators are far less forgiving of that than the utility grid. Soft starters or VFDs on the largest motors can dramatically reduce the generator size needed.
- Apply realistic diversity. Not everything runs at once, but be honest about peak conditions.
- Aim for a generator loaded in the 50–80% range under normal conditions.
- Consider paralleling two smaller units instead of one large one — you get redundancy and can drop a unit offline during low-load periods.
Canadian winter is the design condition
Temporary power that works fine in July can fail hard in January. On Alberta sites, plan for:
- Cold starting. Block heaters, battery warmers, and winter-grade fuel are non-negotiable. Enclosed or heated generator arrangements pay for themselves the first time it hits -35°C.
- Fuel management. Diesel gels. Use winter blends, keep tanks full to limit condensation, and schedule deliveries so a storm doesn't leave you dry.
- Cable in the cold. Standard cable jackets get brittle and crack in extreme cold. Specify cold-rated cable and avoid flexing it when it's frozen.
- Snow and ice. Distribution equipment needs to stay accessible and protected from snow load and meltwater intrusion.
- Heating loads. Temporary heat is often the single largest load on a winter construction site and is frequently left out of early estimates.
Common mistakes we see
- Treating the generator rental company's sizing suggestion as an engineered load study. They're guessing from what you told them.
- Skipping the permit because "it's only for a few weeks."
- Bonded-neutral generators connected to a system that already has a bonded neutral, creating parallel neutral paths.
- Feeder cable run across haul roads with no protection.
- No fuel contingency plan.
- No one clearly responsible for the temporary system — it's everyone's and therefore no one's.
- Forgetting that temporary switchgear needs an arc flash label and appropriate PPE, same as permanent gear.
